Good deal for a sample pack
I am expanding my coffee shop to offer handcrafted Italian sodas. I am getting a few ounces of the most common soda flavor concentrates -- cola, lemon-lime, doctor, mountain, and root beer -- from several flavor companies to compare both the flavor and the cost per drink. RIO fares well in some taste tests, not so well in others. RIO's cost per drink is on the low end of the range, which is good; other flavor companies want up to 3X as much per drink. Standardizing on the price of the quart of concentrate (6 quarts for $122.40), RIO runs 2.156¢ per mL, or about 6-1/2¢ per 16 oz drink. Note that I'm using between 2.8 and 3.2 mL of flavor per 16 oz drink, which is a bit higher than the 2.5 mL/drink in the "mixing instructions" (4 oz in 1 gallon, then 2 oz in 12 oz of drink). I add the flavor separately from the sweetener, so I can sweeten with sugar, stevia, or Splenda (part of what "handcrafted" means). Once I settle on a primary brand for the "hard to match" flavors (like cola and root beer), I'll buy the "easy" flavors (strawberry, cherry, mango, tiger's blood, pina colada, etc.) from the same supplier.
