Traditional Banana Split Recipes

Banana Split Recipe # 1

  • 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream
  • 1/2 cup chocolate ice cream
  • 1/2 cup strawberry ice cream
  • 1 large banana
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup (or Hot Fudge)
  • 2 tablespoons strawberry ice cream topping (or fresh strawberries)
  • 2 tablespoons crushed pineapple
  • 2 tablespoons walnut ice cream topping
  • whipped cream
  • cherries
Line up ice cream scoops next to each other in an oval deep dish or a banana boat. Cut the ends of the banana off (about 1/4 inch). Slice in half longways. Pop each half of the banana out of the peel onto each side of the ice cream row, pressing down and in a little so it'll stay put. Top the vanilla ice cream with the pineapple, the chocolate with the chocolate syrup and the strawberry with the strawberry sauce. Spoon the wet walnuts over all three scoops of ice cream. Top each scoop with some whipped cream and a cherry for each.

    Banana Split Recipe # 5

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 3 scoops good-quality ice cream, slightly softened (your choice of flavors)
  • 2 to 3 Tbsp. raspberry topping, warm or cold
  • 2 to 3 Tbsp. good-quality caramel or butterscotch topping, slightly warmed
  • 2 to 3 Tbsp. hot fudge sauce, slightly warmed
  • whipped cream
  • chocolate sprinkles
  • a maraschino cherry or two
Rinse and dry the banana, then peel it. Split the banana in half vertically (the long way), and place each half on an opposite side of your dish, seed side in. Working quickly, place three scoops of ice cream in a row, between the banana halves. Top each scoop with a different topping. Garnish the banana split with lightly sweetened whipped cream (use it judicially here—you don't want to cover up too much of the pretty effect of the toppings over the ice creams). Sprinkle the whipped cream lightly with chocolate sprinkles, then top with a maraschino cherry or two.

    Banana Split Recipe # 6

  • 1 banana
  • 3 scoops of ice cream (Any flavors - vanilla is traditional)
  • walnuts packed in a syrup (in a jar)
  • whipped cream
  • chocolate syrup
  • sprinkles
  • 2 red maraschino cherries
You need some type of long individual "boat" type of dish for a nice presentation. Peel the banana and slice it lengthwise so you have two long halves. Lay the halves, flat side up, in the dish. I use put on three scoops of ice cream. Choose your own flavors but vanilla tends to be traditional. A vanilla and strawberry blend also works well. You also need "wet nuts". These are walnuts packed in a syrup (in a jar). They're sold in supermarkets with the cones, sprinkles and other ice cream fixings. Put a few spoonsful of nuts over the ice cream. Layer on the whipped cream. I use three mounds of whipped cream, one on top of each scoop of ice cream. You can also drizzle some chocolate syrup gently over the whipped cream as well as sprinkles. Top with some red maraschino cherries.
