MILKSHAKES
Milk shakes are one of everybody’s favorite treats.
Shakes or milkshakes are a staple of soda fountains, malt shops and diners. The names and ingredients are as varied as the establishments that sell them. Milkshakes all have these basic ingredients in common: ice cream, milk and flavoring.

Flavoring can be as simple as whatever flavor the ice cream is. Generally a flavored syrup like chocolate, caramel or strawberry is added. Jelly, jam and preserves also make excellent flavor components. Fresh or frozen fruit will make a delicious milkshake. An ounce or two of a complementary syrup used with jam or fruit can really make your milkshake sing. Also, a wide variety of chopped cookies and candy bars are used as add-ins for milkshakes. These are mostly used in very thick milkshakes known as “concretes”. Milk shakes made with our syrup are easy and the variety is endless. Best of all, you don’t need gourmet ice cream to get a great shake with our syrup. The syrup flavors are so good you can use any inexpensive ice cream and save a buck or two. For fans of Malted Milkshakes try our Malted Milk Powder for an authentic malted shake.

In general the ice cream flavor and the flavoring are complementary but any combination that tastes good to you is fine. Chocolate ice cream and chocolate syrup, peach ice cream with peach preserves are easy enough. Another example would be mint ice cream and chocolate syrup or how about chocolate ice cream with maraschino cherries. You get the idea. And of course, vanilla ice cream will go with any flavoring.

Milk is the thinning agent with makes the other ingredients into a milkshake. There is considerable controversy over what constitutes the perfect consistency for a milkshake. (a lot of ‘c’ words in that sentence) On one end of the spectrum are adherents who like a milkshake easily drinkable through a straw. On the other end are those who prefer a shake thick enough that you can’t even use a straw. You’ll have to make this determination for yourself. Just remember, if your shake is too thick, add some milk. If it’s too thin add another scoop of ice cream. The consistency is easily adjusted.

Lastly the ingredients all have to blended until smooth in a blender or a milkshake mixer. Use your blender or try our frozen drink machine for professional results. There’s the skinny on milkshakes.
